Backing up a Raspberry Pi SD card

Simplest thing that worked for me: shut the Pi down, put the card in a laptop and image it with dd, then compress.

sudo dd if=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress | gzip > pi-backup.img.gz

Restoring is the same in reverse. Check the device name twice.
